Tesla has surpassed financial expectations for the third quarter of 2026, as CEO Elon Musk hinted at the potential for a merger with SpaceX. The electric vehicle manufacturer reported a revenue of $28.05 billion and earnings of $0.48 per share, exceeding analysts’ projections of $27.9 billion in revenue and $0.43 per share. Despite this success, Tesla’s revenue slightly decreased from $28.23 billion in the previous quarter, and its automotive revenue saw a 3% decline compared to the same period last year.
During Tesla’s earnings call, Musk acknowledged the possible benefits of merging Tesla with SpaceX, his aerospace and artificial intelligence company, but did not provide further elaboration on the matter. Previously, he mentioned that both companies’ boards had formed special committees to evaluate the merger proposal, though no terms have been agreed upon. Any merger would require approval from at least half of Tesla’s shareholders.
Tesla continues to broaden its scope beyond electric vehicles, venturing into artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, robotics, and renewable energy fields. However, its Robotaxi service is encountering hurdles in fleet expansion and city entry, and the development of its Optimus humanoid robots is facing production challenges. Despite these obstacles, Musk remains optimistic about the future of humanoid robots, predicting they could become a significant product category globally.
The company also confronts increasing competition from lower-priced Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers as it seeks to achieve its goals in emerging technologies. Nonetheless, Tesla’s focus on innovation and diversification continues to drive its strategy and market presence.
